Information on our breeds of cattle

Why Scottish Highlands?

This is a common question and other than their cute faces, shaggy hair and that they seem to be on at least one picture in any home decor store they do serve a purpose. Here are some of the many reason we choose to pursue this breed of cattle.

  • In relation to other breeds of cattle they are extremely intelligent and trainable.
  • They are very even tempered and docile - which makes them easier to halter train and handle in general.
  • Their meat is lower in cholesterol and fat, but higher in protein compared to other breeds of cattle.
  • Highlands are the oldest registered breed of cattle on record.
  • Highlands require little shelter, feed supplements, or expensive grains to reach and maintain good health.
  • This breed posses a genetic advantage and is more hardy to diseases that otherwise would severely effect other breeds of cattle.
  • They adapt to climates they live in and will shed their coats during the summer to have shorter hair in the summer and thicken up during the colder winter months.
  • With the shaggy fur during the winter, highlands don't need to add a layer of fat to keep warm. This allows them to marble naturally with low forage input while maintaining low fat, high quality cuts of beef.
  • They are a multi-purpose breed. Producing meat, milk & fiber.
  • They are also often used to clear underbrush on pastures as they forage on many things most cattle breeds will not forage on.
